Video Summary
This study of 597 subjects examined whether bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and aortic stenosis are linked to increased global aortic stiffness, measured by pulse wave velocity from 4D flow MRI. Researchers compared healthy controls, tricuspid valve patients, and BAV patients with and without stenosis. Age predicted higher pulse wave velocity in all groups. In healthy subjects, aortic diameter also mattered, but not in patient groups. BAV without stenosis did not show abnormal stiffness, while BAV with stenosis—especially more severe stenosis—was associated with elevated pulse wave velocity, suggesting altered hemodynamics contribute to aortopathy.
