Video Summary
The study developed a retrospectively gated 2D phase-contrast MRI sequence using feature tracking to follow the mitral valve in real time and better measure transmitral flow. In 16 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with mitral regurgitation, slice-following imaging outperformed static imaging by reducing bias and variability in stroke volume measurements. Through-plane motion correction showed that about 14% of measured mitral flow reflected valve-plane displacement rather than true blood flow. The method also visualized regurgitation in patients, suggesting it may improve assessment of mitral valve function and heart failure-related valvular disease.
